The STARRETT 54312 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die work, jig fabrication, and precision machining applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specifications, this flat stock measures 1/8 inch thick, 6 inches wide, and 36 inches long, with a weight of 7.66 pounds per piece. Thickness tolerance is held to +/- 0.001 inches, making it suitable for applications where dimensional consistency is critical before and after heat treatment. Machinists, toolmakers, and die makers rely on O1 steel for its predictable oil-quench hardening characteristics and good dimensional stability through the hardening process.
This flat stock is well-suited for fabricating punches, dies, gauges, knives, and other tooling components in job shop, production, and maintenance environments. The 6-inch width and 36-inch length provide substantial working stock for cutting multiple blanks or for large flat tooling components. Both small shops and larger manufacturing operations use O1 flat stock as a baseline material where moderate wear resistance and ease of machining in the annealed condition are required. It ships in the annealed (soft) condition and must be heat treated by the end user to achieve working hardness.
Designed as a general-purpose O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat bar suitable for custom tooling, die making, gauging, and precision component fabrication where AISI Type O1 material specification is required.
Cutting, grinding, and machining of tool steel flat stock should be performed by qualified machinists or toolmakers using appropriate cutting fluids and tooling rated for tool steel. Heat treatment to working hardness requires oil quenching and must be performed in accordance with established metallurgical procedures for AISI O1 steel. Always wear appropriate PPE when cutting or grinding tool steel. Follow applicable shop safety codes when operating machine tools or heat treatment equipment.
