The STARRETT 54289 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications. Measuring 3/32 inches thick, 6 inches wide, and 36 inches long, this flat stock is produced from AISI Type O1 tool steel and supplied in the annealed condition, ready for machining and subsequent oil-hardening heat treatment. Thickness tolerance is held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, making it suitable for applications where dimensional consistency is critical before and after heat treat. Machinists, tool and die makers, and skilled fabricators are the primary users of this material.
O1 tool steel flat stock in this size is commonly used to produce punches, dies, gauges, cutting tools, and precision fixtures in job shops, toolrooms, and manufacturing facilities. The 6-inch width and 36-inch length provide sufficient stock for multiple smaller blanks or a single large die plate. The annealed condition allows for conventional machining prior to hardening and tempering to final hardness. This size is appropriate for both light and moderate tooling applications where oil-quench heat treatment is the specified process.
Designed as a standard AISI Type O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat bar suitable for general toolroom and die-making use where O1 specification material is required.
Machining of O1 tool steel flat stock should be performed by qualified machinists familiar with tool steel working practices. Use appropriate cutting speeds and feeds for annealed tool steel, and ensure adequate coolant is applied during cutting and grinding operations. Heat treatment, including hardening and tempering, should be carried out by personnel trained in tool steel heat treat procedures in accordance with applicable shop standards. Handle large flat stock with care to avoid edge damage that could affect squareness tolerances.
