The STARRETT 54285 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications. Manufactured from AISI Type O1 tool steel, this flat stock measures 3/32 inches thick, 2-1/2 inches wide, and 36 inches long, and weighs 2.36 pounds. Thickness tolerance is held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, and squareness on all edges is maintained at 0.003 inches per inch. O1 tool steel offers good machinability in the annealed condition and responds well to oil quenching during hardening, making it a dependable choice for punches, gauges, jigs, and cutting tools.
This flat stock is suited for machine shops, toolrooms, and fabrication environments where close-tolerance blanks are required. Machinists and tool-and-die makers use O1 flat stock as raw material for custom tooling, fixtures, and wear components. The 36-inch length provides enough material to yield multiple smaller blanks from a single piece. Because the material is supplied in the annealed state, it can be machined, ground, or drilled before hardening to final working hardness through standard oil-quench heat treatment.
Designed as a standard O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock blank suitable for toolroom and machine shop applications requiring close-tolerance AISI O1 material in this size.
O1 tool steel flat stock is machined and heat-treated by qualified machinists and toolmakers. Secure workpieces properly during machining and grinding operations. Heat treatment to final hardness should follow established AISI O1 oil-quench procedures and must be performed in appropriate equipment. Allow parts to reach uniform temperature before quenching to reduce the risk of distortion or cracking.
