The STARRETT 54284 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar sized at 3/32 inches thick, 2 inches wide, and 36 inches long. O1 is an AISI-designation oil-hardening tool steel widely used in toolmaking, die work, and precision machining applications where consistent hardness and dimensional accuracy are required. This flat stock ships in an annealed (soft) condition, allowing machinists and toolmakers to cut, grind, and shape it before hardening. Thickness tolerance is held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, making it suitable for applications that demand close starting tolerances before final grind. The bar weighs approximately 1.94 pounds.
This flat stock is used in tool and die shops, machine shops, and metalworking facilities for fabricating punches, dies, gauges, jigs, fixtures, and similar tooling components. It is an appropriate choice for short-run tooling where oil-quench hardening is the preferred heat-treat method. Machinists, toolmakers, and die makers are the primary installers and end users of this material.
Designed as a standard O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat bar for general toolmaking and die-making applications requiring AISI Type O1 material specification.
Cutting, drilling, and grinding should be performed while the stock is in the annealed condition before heat treatment. Heat treating O1 tool steel requires controlled atmosphere or salt-bath furnace equipment and should be performed by a qualified heat treater or machinist familiar with oil-quench hardening procedures. Always wear appropriate PPE when cutting or grinding tool steel. Consult applicable shop safety standards and equipment manufacturer guidelines during all machining and heat-treat operations.
