The STARRETT 54283 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, fixture building, jig fabrication, and general machine shop work. Manufactured from AISI Type O1 tool steel, this flat stock is supplied in the annealed condition, ready for machining, grinding, and subsequent oil-quench hardening by a tool and die maker or machinist. The bar measures 3/32 inch thick, 1-1/2 inches wide, and 36 inches long, with a thickness tolerance of plus or minus 0.001 inch. Weight is 1.46 pounds per bar. O1 is a widely used oil-hardening grade known for its good dimensional stability during heat treatment and ease of machining in the annealed state.
This flat stock is suited for producing punches, dies, gauges, lathe centers, taps, reamers, and other tooling components that require moderate wear resistance and good hardness after heat treatment. The 36-inch length allows a machinist to cut multiple blanks from a single bar. The 3/32-inch thickness is appropriate for thin tooling components, shims, and wear strips where precise ground dimensions are required before hardening. Each bar ships individually, with a minimum order quantity of one piece.
Designed as a general-purpose O1 tool steel flat stock bar suitable for use in tool and die, moldmaking, and precision machining applications where oil-hardening tool steel stock is specified.
O1 tool steel flat stock is machined and ground by qualified tool and die makers or machinists prior to heat treatment. Hardening involves heating to the appropriate austenitizing temperature and quenching in oil, followed by tempering; consult a recognized heat-treatment reference or material data sheet for proper thermal cycles before processing. Use appropriate personal protective equipment and ventilation when machining, grinding, or heat-treating tool steel. Store bar stock flat to prevent warping and protect ground surfaces from corrosion prior to use.
