The STARRETT 54279 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, jig fabrication, die making, and precision machining applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specifications, this flat stock measures 3/32 inches thick, 1/2 inch wide, and 36 inches long, with a thickness tolerance of plus or minus 0.001 inches. The O1 grade offers good machinability in the annealed state and responds well to oil-quench hardening, making it a go-to material for tool and die shops that need consistent, predictable results from raw stock.
This flat stock is suited for fabricating cutting tools, punches, blanking dies, gauges, and similar precision components in both small-shop and production toolroom environments. The 36-inch length allows for efficient cut-to-size work with minimal waste. Machinists, tool and die makers, and metal fabricators working in industrial or maintenance-repair settings are the primary users of this material. Each piece ships individually, with a minimum order quantity of one.
Designed as a standard AISI O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat bar suitable for general toolroom use wherever O1 grade flat stock in 3/32 x 1/2 x 36-inch dimensions is specified.
Cutting, grinding, and machining of tool steel flat stock should be performed by qualified machinists or tool and die makers using appropriate metalworking equipment. When hardening, follow established oil-quench procedures for O1 tool steel and allow parts to temper immediately after quench to reduce the risk of cracking. Always wear appropriate PPE including safety glasses and heat-resistant gloves during any heat-treating operations. Consult applicable shop safety standards and material data sheets before processing.
