The STARRETT 54268 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die work, jig fabrication, and precision machining applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specification, this flat stock measures 1/16 inch thick, 5 inches wide, and 36 inches long, with a weight of 3.19 pounds. Thickness tolerance is held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, making it suitable for applications where close dimensional control is required before and after heat treatment. Machinists, tool and die makers, and metal fabricators work with this material in shop environments where predictable hardening response and dimensional accuracy are priorities.
O1 tool steel flat stock in this size is commonly used for blanking dies, punches, guides, gauges, and fixture components in both job shop and production toolroom settings. The 5-inch width and 36-inch length provide enough material to cut multiple blanks from a single bar. This stock is supplied in the annealed condition and is intended to be machined to shape prior to oil-quench hardening and tempering. It is well suited for residential and commercial shop applications where a general-purpose oil-hardening tool steel is specified.
Designed as a standard AISI Type O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock suitable for toolroom, die-making, and precision fabrication applications requiring oil-quench heat treatment.
Cutting, grinding, and machining should be performed while the stock is in the annealed condition before heat treatment. Oil-quench hardening and tempering should be performed by a qualified heat treater or machinist familiar with tool steel processing procedures. Follow all applicable shop safety procedures when cutting or grinding tool steel, including use of appropriate PPE and ventilation. Do not attempt to weld O1 tool steel without consulting the material specification for preheat and post-weld heat treatment requirements.
