The STARRETT 54266 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die work, jig fabrication, and precision machining applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specifications, this flat stock measures 1/16 inch thick, 3-1/2 inches wide, and 36 inches long, and weighs 2.23 pounds. Thickness tolerance is held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, making it suitable for applications requiring close dimensional control before hardening. Machinists, tool and die makers, and metal fabricators work with this material to produce punches, dies, gauges, and custom cutting tools. O1 tool steel machines readily in the annealed state and responds well to oil-quench heat treatment to achieve high hardness.
This flat stock is suited for job shop and production toolroom environments where O1 tool steel is the specified material. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment when sawing, milling, or grinding this material. Heat treatment, including hardening and tempering, should follow AISI O1 guidelines for oil quenching and should be performed in a controlled environment by personnel familiar with tool steel metallurgy. Allow the workpiece to cool properly between machining operations to avoid altering material properties prior to heat treatment.
