The STARRETT 54260 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar intended for toolmakers, machinists, and die makers who need a reliable, pre-sized blank for cutting tools, punches, dies, jigs, and fixtures. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specification, this flat bar measures 1/16 inch thick, 1-1/4 inches wide, and 36 inches long and weighs 0.8 pounds. Thickness tolerance is held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, making it suitable for applications where close dimensional control before heat treatment is required. O1 tool steel is known for its good machinability in the annealed state and its response to oil quench hardening.
This flat stock is used in toolroom and production machine shop environments. Typical applications include making form tools, hand scrapers, small punches, and precision fixtures. It is sold as a single 36-inch length, allowing a technician or machinist to cut it to final part length with standard metalworking equipment. The annealed condition means it can be machined, ground, or filed before hardening and tempering to final hardness.
Designed as a standard AISI O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat bar suitable for general toolroom use wherever 1/16 inch by 1-1/4 inch cross-section flat stock is specified.
Cutting, grinding, or machining should be performed while the stock is in the annealed condition prior to heat treatment. A licensed heat treater or qualified machinist should perform oil quench hardening and tempering to achieve target hardness. Use appropriate personal protective equipment and follow shop safety procedures when cutting or grinding tool steel. Verify final dimensions after any grinding operation before committing to heat treatment.
