The STARRETT 54243 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die-making, and precision machining applications. Measuring 1-1/2 inches thick, 3 inches wide, and 18 inches long, this flat stock is manufactured to AISI Type O1 material specification and held to tight dimensional tolerances. Thickness tolerance is +/- 0.001 inches, making it suitable for applications where close-tolerance blanks are required before heat treat. At 22.95 pounds, it is a substantial bar suited for heavy-duty tooling work. This stock is supplied in the annealed condition and must be heat treated by the end user to reach working hardness.
O1 tool steel flat stock is commonly used in machine shops, tool and die shops, and industrial maintenance environments. Typical applications include cutting tools, punches, dies, gauges, and wear parts. The 18-inch length provides a practical starting blank for most toolroom work. Machinists and tool and die makers select O1 for its excellent machinability in the annealed state and its ability to hold fine detail through the oil-quench hardening process. This bar is appropriate for both prototype and production tooling work.
Designed as a general-purpose O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock blank for toolroom, die shop, and precision machining applications requiring AISI Type O1 material specification.
Cutting and machining of tool steel flat stock should be performed with appropriate high-speed steel or carbide tooling by qualified machinists or tool and die makers. This bar is supplied in the annealed condition and requires oil quench heat treatment to achieve working hardness — heat treating should be performed by qualified personnel following established procedures for AISI O1 tool steel. Always use proper workholding and machine guarding when sawing or milling heavy bar stock of this size. Follow applicable shop safety standards when handling stock at this weight.
