The STARRETT 54241 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications. Manufactured from AISI Type O1 tool steel, this flat stock measures 1.5 inches thick, 2 inches wide, and 18 inches long, with a finished weight of 15.3 pounds. Thickness and squareness tolerances are held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, making it well-suited for applications requiring close dimensional control before and after hardening. Machinists, tool-and-die makers, and metalworking shops select O1 flat stock for its predictable response to oil-quench heat treatment and its consistent pre-hardened machinability.
O1 tool steel flat stock is a standard raw material in job shops, toolrooms, and manufacturing facilities that produce punches, dies, gauges, jigs, and fixtures. This bar is supplied in the annealed condition, ready for machining to final shape prior to oil-hardening heat treatment. The 18-inch length provides a practical starting size for a wide range of tooling blanks without excessive material waste. It is appropriate for both short-run prototype tooling and production die components.
Designed as a standard raw-material flat stock for toolroom and die-making applications requiring AISI O1 oil-hardening tool steel in bar form.
Machining and heat treatment of tool steel should be performed by qualified machinists or tool-and-die makers familiar with O1 steel properties. Follow established shop safety practices when cutting, grinding, or handling steel bar stock. Oil-quench hardening requires controlled furnace equipment and appropriate personal protective equipment — do not attempt heat treatment without proper facilities. Consult material data sheets for recommended annealing and hardening temperature ranges before processing.
