The STARRETT 54236 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die work, jig fabrication, and precision machining applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 material specification, this flat stock measures 1-1/4 inches thick, 5 inches wide, and 18 inches long, with a weight of 31.88 pounds. Thickness and squareness tolerances are held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, making it suitable for applications that require tight dimensional control before heat treatment. Machinists, tool and die makers, and precision fabricators work with this material when building cutting tools, gauges, punches, and similar hardened-steel components.
O1 tool steel flat stock is used across job shops, tool rooms, and production facilities wherever a readily machinable, oil-quench hardenable steel is required. This bar is appropriate for annealed stock removal, followed by heat treatment to achieve the hardness needed for tooling applications. Its larger cross-section makes it well suited for die blocks, wear plates, and blanks that require significant stock removal prior to finish grinding. This piece ships as a single 18-inch bar, packaged as one unit per order.
Designed as a standard AISI O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat bar suitable for general toolroom and die-making applications requiring oil-quench heat treatment.
O1 tool steel flat stock is worked by qualified machinists and tool and die makers using conventional milling, turning, grinding, and EDM equipment. When heat treating, follow the material manufacturer's recommended austenitizing and quench procedures for O1 tool steel to achieve target hardness without cracking. Allow the bar to reach a uniform temperature before quenching. Proper eye and skin protection should be used during any grinding or cutting operations.
