The STARRETT 54227 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in precision toolmaking, die making, and machining applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specification, this flat stock measures 1-1/8 inches thick, 3 inches wide, and 18 inches long, weighing approximately 17.22 pounds. Thickness and squareness tolerances are held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, making it suitable for applications that demand tight dimensional accuracy. Machinists, tool and die makers, and industrial fabricators work with this material when building jigs, fixtures, gauges, punches, and dies that will be oil-quench hardened after machining.
O1 tool steel is a general-purpose oil-hardening grade widely used in job shops and tool rooms for producing cutting tools, blanking dies, forming tools, and precision fixtures. This flat stock is supplied in the annealed condition, ready for machining prior to heat treatment. The 18-inch length and 3-inch width provide practical stock dimensions for a broad range of toolroom applications. Width tolerance is held from 0 to minus 0.005 inches, and length tolerance is plus 0.250 inches, with edge squareness maintained at 0.003 inches per inch across all edges.
Designed as a standard O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock suitable for use in general toolroom, die making, and precision machining applications requiring oil-quench heat treatment after machining.
This material is supplied annealed and must be machined before hardening. Heat treatment to final hardness should be performed by a qualified heat treater following established procedures for AISI O1 tool steel, including proper pre-heat, austenitizing, oil quenching, and tempering cycles. Use appropriate personal protective equipment when cutting, grinding, or machining tool steel. Follow applicable shop safety standards and equipment manufacturer guidelines throughout fabrication and heat treatment.
