The STARRETT 54226 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, jig and fixture fabrication, punch and die work, and precision machining applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specification, it measures 1-1/8 inches thick, 2 inches wide, and 18 inches long. Thickness and squareness tolerances are held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, making this stock suitable for applications where dimensional accuracy is critical before and after hardening. At 11.48 pounds, the bar is sized for bench-scale toolroom work. O1 tool steel offers good machinability in the annealed state and responds predictably to oil-quench heat treatment.
O1 flat stock in this size range is a standard toolroom material used by tool and die makers, machinists, and mold makers in both job shops and in-house maintenance departments. Typical applications include blanks for punches, dies, cutting tools, gauges, and wear plates. The 18-inch length provides sufficient stock for most bench tooling applications without requiring resawing. This bar is supplied in the annealed condition and is intended to be machined, ground, and then hardened by the end user.
Designed as a standard AISI O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat bar suitable for general toolroom and die shop use wherever O1 specification flat stock is required.
Machining and grinding should be completed in the annealed state prior to heat treatment. Oil quenching and tempering operations should be performed by a qualified heat treater or experienced toolmaker following established metallurgical procedures for O1 tool steel. Use appropriate personal protective equipment when handling during and after heat treatment. Secure the workpiece properly during sawing or milling to prevent movement and ensure accurate cuts.
