The STARRETT 54225 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 material specification, this flat stock measures 1-1/8 inches thick, 1-1/2 inches wide, and 18 inches long. It weighs 6.46 pounds. Thickness tolerance is held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, and squareness on all edges is controlled to 0.003 inches per inch, making this stock suitable for close-tolerance tooling work. Machinists, tool and die makers, and fabricators use this material as a starting blank for punches, dies, gauges, and fixtures that require subsequent heat treatment.
O1 tool steel flat stock is a standard material in job shops, tool rooms, and maintenance departments. The 18-inch length provides enough bar stock for most tooling blanks without requiring resawing. The oil-hardening designation means this steel is hardened by quenching in oil rather than water, reducing distortion risk during heat treatment. Do not attempt to harden this material without appropriate quench facilities and protective equipment.
