The STARRETT 54220 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar measuring 1 inch thick, 5 inches wide, and 18 inches long. O1 is a general-purpose, cold-work tool steel valued for its excellent machinability in the annealed state and its ability to achieve high hardness after oil quenching. This flat stock ships in the annealed condition, ready for machining, grinding, and final heat treatment. It is commonly used by toolmakers, die makers, machinists, and maintenance shops to fabricate punches, dies, gauges, jigs, and cutting tools. The piece weighs approximately 25.5 pounds and holds tight dimensional tolerances straight from the mill.
This flat stock is suited for toolroom and production applications where close dimensional accuracy is required before heat treat. It is appropriate for both short-run prototype work and production tooling in job shops, maintenance facilities, and manufacturing environments. The annealed O1 material allows conventional milling, turning, and surface grinding prior to hardening and tempering. Stock length of 18 inches makes it practical for a wide range of die and fixture components without excessive remnant waste.

Cutting, grinding, and machining of tool steel flat stock should be performed by a qualified machinist or toolmaker using appropriate coolant to avoid surface overheating. Heat treatment, including hardening and tempering of O1 steel, must be performed by qualified personnel following established metallurgical procedures and applicable shop safety codes. Always wear appropriate PPE including eye protection and heat-resistant gloves when cutting or heat treating tool steel. Secure the workpiece properly before any machining operation to prevent movement or injury.
