The STARRETT 54217 is a precision-ground O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar intended for toolmakers, machinists, and die makers who require tight dimensional tolerances and consistent material properties. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specifications, this flat stock measures 1 inch thick, 3.5 inches wide, and 18 inches long and weighs 17.85 pounds. Thickness tolerance is held to +/- 0.001 inches, and edge squareness is held to 0.003 inches per inch, making it suitable for precision tooling applications where stock removal must be predictable and minimal.
O1 tool steel flat stock is used in the fabrication of punches, dies, gauges, jigs, and cutting tools in both job shop and production toolroom environments. The oil-hardening grade is well suited for applications where dimensional stability during heat treat is critical. This bar is sold as a single piece and is appropriate for saw-cutting, milling, grinding, or EDM work prior to hardening. Machinists and tool and die professionals are the primary users of this stock form.
Designed as a standard O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat bar for general toolroom and die-making applications requiring AISI Type O1 material specification.
Cutting and machining of tool steel flat stock should be performed with appropriate metalworking equipment including band saws, milling machines, and surface grinders. Secure the workpiece firmly in a vise or fixture before cutting to prevent movement. When hardening, follow established heat treating procedures for AISI O1 tool steel including proper quench media and temper cycles. Grinding after hardening requires adequate coolant to prevent surface burn and stress cracking.
