The STARRETT 54213 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die making, punch fabrication, and precision machining applications. It is produced to AISI Type O1 material specification, a widely used oil-hardening tool steel known for its dimensional stability during heat treatment. This bar measures 1 inch thick, 1-1/2 inches wide, and 18 inches long, with a weight of 7.65 pounds. Thickness tolerance is held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, making it suitable for applications that require close stock-to-finish allowances. Machinists and toolmakers typically stock this material for custom tooling, fixtures, gauges, and forming dies.
This flat stock is intended for use in tool and die shops, machine shops, and maintenance departments requiring pre-cut O1 tool steel in a ready-to-machine condition. It arrives in the annealed state, allowing conventional machining before hardening. The 18-inch length provides a practical starting size for individual tool blanks, small die components, or gauge stock. It is sold in single-piece quantities with a minimum order quantity of one.
Designed as standard O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock suitable for toolmaking, die work, gauge fabrication, and general precision machining wherever AISI O1 material specification is required.
This material is supplied in the annealed condition and should be machined using tooling rated for tool steel stock. Heat treatment — including oil quench hardening and tempering — should be performed by qualified personnel following established heat-treat procedures appropriate for AISI O1 steel. Use proper machine guarding and workholding during sawing, milling, or grinding operations. Allow material to reach ambient temperature before final inspection measurements are taken.
