The STARRETT 54211 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar measuring 1 inch thick, 1 inch wide, and 18 inches long. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specification, this flat stock is a pre-hardened-grade steel bar used in toolmaking, die making, punches, gauges, and precision machined components. The O1 grade oil-hardens readily in the field, making it a standard choice for toolroom applications where controlled heat treatment follows final machining. Thickness and squareness tolerances are held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, supporting tight-tolerance work before hardening. Weight is 5.1 pounds per bar.
This flat stock is suited for machine shops, toolrooms, and metalworking trade environments. Typical applications include fabricating cutting tools, jigs, fixtures, form dies, and wear-resistant components. The 18-inch length allows a machinist to cut multiple blanks from a single bar. The 1 inch by 1 inch cross-section is a common starting size for punch and die stock. Installation into a finished assembly is completed after machining and heat treatment by qualified toolmakers or machinists.
Designed as a standard AISI O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat bar for general toolroom and die-shop use where O1 grade stock is specified.
Machining of O1 tool steel flat stock should be completed before oil-hardening heat treatment. Heat treatment and quenching must be performed by qualified personnel following established metallurgical procedures for AISI O1 steel. Always wear appropriate PPE when cutting, grinding, or heat treating tool steel. Consult applicable shop safety codes and material safety data for tool steel handling.
