The STARRETT 54206 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die work, punches, gauges, and precision machined components. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specification, this flat stock measures 7/8 inch thick, 2 inches wide, and 18 inches long, and weighs 8.92 pounds. Thickness and squareness tolerances are held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, making this bar suitable for applications where dimensional accuracy is required before heat treatment. Machinists, tool and die makers, and industrial maintenance technicians work with O1 flat stock when a hardenable, oil-quench steel in ready-to-machine bar form is needed.
O1 tool steel flat stock is used in shops producing custom cutting tools, jigs, fixtures, wear plates, and forming dies. The 18-inch length provides enough stock for most single-component tooling jobs without requiring additional cutoff. The 7/8-inch by 2-inch cross section suits medium-duty die blocks and punch blanks. This bar ships in the annealed condition and is intended to be machined to near-final dimensions before oil-hardening heat treatment is performed.
Designed as a standard O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat bar suitable for general toolmaking and die-making applications where AISI Type O1 material specification is required.
O1 tool steel flat stock is worked by machinists and tool and die makers using conventional milling, grinding, and turning equipment. Material should be machined to near-final dimensions in the annealed condition before hardening. Oil-hardening heat treatment should be performed by qualified personnel following established metallurgical procedures for AISI O1 steel. Allow the bar to reach uniform shop temperature before precision layout or machining to avoid thermal measurement error.
