The STARRETT 54203 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications. Conforming to AISI Type O1 specification, this flat stock measures 7/8 inch thick, 1 inch wide, and 18 inches long, with tightly controlled tolerances: thickness tolerance of plus or minus 0.001 inches, width tolerance of minus 0.000 to minus 0.005 inches, and length tolerance of plus 0.250 inches. Edge squareness is held to 0.003 inches per inch across all edges. The 54203 ships at 4.46 pounds and is suited for machinists, tool and die makers, and metalworking shops requiring consistent stock for hardening and grinding operations.
O1 tool steel flat stock is a standard material in tool and die shops, jig and fixture work, and precision gauge fabrication. The O1 grade is widely used where oil-quench hardening is required prior to finish grinding. This bar stock is sized for direct use as a blank for punches, dies, gauges, and similar tooling components. It is appropriate for both job shop and production environments where predictable heat-treat response and dimensional consistency are critical before and after hardening.
Designed as a standard O1 oil-hardening flat stock blank for use in tool and die, jig, fixture, and precision machining applications requiring AISI Type O1 material.
Cutting, grinding, and heat treatment of tool steel should be performed by qualified machinists or tool and die makers using appropriate personal protective equipment. Always allow the material to reach a uniform soak temperature before oil quenching to minimize distortion. Grinding after hardening requires adequate coolant to prevent surface softening from heat buildup. Follow applicable shop safety standards when handling tool steel stock.
