The STARRETT 54202 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar intended for toolmakers, machinists, and die makers who need precision-ground stock ready for layout, machining, or hardening. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specification, this flat stock measures 7/8 inches thick by 7/8 inches wide by 18 inches long and weighs 3.91 pounds. Thickness and squareness tolerances are held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, making it suitable for applications where dimensional accuracy is critical before and after heat treatment. O1 tool steel responds well to oil-quench hardening and is widely used for punches, dies, gauges, and cutting tools.
This flat stock is suited for machine shops, tool and die operations, and maintenance facilities that fabricate custom tooling in-house. The 18-inch length provides enough material for multiple blanks depending on the finished part size. The square cross-section and tight tolerances reduce setup time when milling or grinding to final dimensions. It is appropriate for both one-off prototype tooling and small production runs of dies or jigs.
Designed as a standard O1 oil-hardening flat stock blank for use in general tool and die fabrication, gauge making, punch and die applications, and other precision machining operations requiring AISI Type O1 tool steel.
Cutting and machining of tool steel flat stock should be performed by qualified machinists using appropriate cutting fluids and tooling rated for hardened or semi-hardened steel. Heat treatment including oil quenching should follow AISI O1 guidelines and be carried out in a controlled environment. Always allow stock to reach ambient temperature before taking final measurements to ensure dimensional accuracy.
