The STARRETT 54197 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die making, jig construction, and precision machining applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specification, this flat stock measures 3/4 inch thick, 5 inches wide, and 18 inches long, with a weight of 19.13 pounds. Tight dimensional tolerances make it suitable for applications requiring consistent stock removal and predictable heat-treat response. The O1 grade is a widely used cold-work tool steel known for good machinability in the annealed state and reliable oil-quench hardening behavior. Machinists, toolmakers, and die makers use this material to fabricate punches, dies, gauges, and similar precision tooling components.
This flat stock is suited for machine shops, tool and die shops, and maintenance facilities producing or refurbishing tooling components. The 18-inch length provides usable blank stock for most standard tooling layouts without excessive cutoff waste. The 5-inch width and 3/4-inch thickness cover a broad range of die block, plate, and fixture applications where O1 tool steel is specified. It is appropriate for both small-run job shop work and prototype tooling fabrication.
Designed as a standard AISI O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock for general toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications where O1 grade material is specified.
Cutting, grinding, and machining should be performed in the annealed state prior to heat treatment. O1 tool steel is typically hardened by oil quenching and requires proper temperature control during heat treat — consult a qualified heat treating facility or applicable metallurgical guidelines before processing. Use appropriate personal protective equipment and machine guarding when sawing or grinding tool steel stock. Secure workpieces firmly before any machining operation to prevent movement given the material weight of 19.13 pounds.
