The STARRETT 54196 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock blank used in toolmaking, jig and fixture fabrication, and precision machining applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specifications, this flat stock measures 0.75 inches thick, 4.5 inches wide, and 18 inches long, with a weight of 17.22 pounds. O1 tool steel is known for its good machinability in the annealed state and its ability to achieve high hardness after oil-quench heat treatment. Thickness tolerance is held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, making this stock suitable for applications requiring close dimensional control before finish grinding.
This flat stock is used in tool and die shops, machine shops, and maintenance departments for fabricating punches, dies, gauges, cutting tools, and other precision components. It is supplied in the annealed condition, ready for machining and subsequent heat treatment. The 18-inch length provides a practical starting size for a range of toolmaking applications. Machinists and tool-and-die makers typically receive and machine this stock before sending it out for or performing in-house oil-hardening heat treatment.
Designed as a general-purpose O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock suitable for toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications where AISI Type O1 material specification is required.
Machining of O1 tool steel flat stock should be performed in the annealed condition using appropriate cutting fluids and tooling rated for tool steel. Heat treatment to achieve final hardness requires oil quenching and should be performed by qualified personnel following established metallurgical procedures and applicable shop safety protocols. Handle stock of this weight with appropriate lifting support to avoid injury or workpiece damage. Inspect dimensions before machining to confirm stock is within tolerance for the intended application.
