The STARRETT 54195 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die making, jig and fixture fabrication, and precision machining applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specifications, this flat stock measures 0.75 inches thick, 4 inches wide, and 18 inches long, with a finished weight of 15.3 pounds. Thickness and squareness tolerances are held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, making this stock suitable for applications where dimensional accuracy before hardening is critical. O1 tool steel offers good machinability in the annealed state and responds well to oil-quench heat treatment to achieve high surface hardness.
This flat stock is used in tool and die shops, machine shops, and industrial fabrication environments. Typical applications include blanks for punches, dies, gauges, knives, and cutting tools. It is appropriate for both short-run tooling and production tooling where a cost-effective, machinable oil-hardening grade is specified. The 18-inch length provides a practical starting size for many toolroom applications without requiring immediate saw reduction from longer bar stock.
Designed as a standard O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock for use in general toolroom, die making, and precision machining applications requiring AISI Type O1 material specification.
Machining and heat treatment of tool steel flat stock is performed by qualified machinists and tool and die makers. O1 tool steel should be stress relieved after rough machining and before finish machining where dimensional stability is critical. Oil quench heat treatment should follow the material manufacturer's published hardening and tempering recommendations for AISI O1. Always wear appropriate PPE when cutting, grinding, or heat treating tool steel.
