The STARRETT 54188 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar intended for toolmakers, machinists, and die makers who require close-tolerance, ready-to-use steel in a workable pre-hardened blank format. Measuring 0.75 inches thick, 1 inch wide, and 18 inches long, this flat stock is manufactured to AISI Type O1 material specification. Thickness tolerance is held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, and width tolerance runs from 0.000 to 0.005 inches. O1 tool steel machines well in the annealed state and responds predictably to oil quench hardening, making it a standard choice for punches, dies, gauges, and cutting tools.
This flat stock is suited to tool and die shops, maintenance machining operations, and industrial fabrication environments where precision blanks are needed without extensive pre-machining. The 18-inch length provides usable stock for multiple smaller tool components from a single piece. Its square edges and close thickness tolerances reduce setup time on surface grinders and milling machines. Edge squareness is held to 0.003 inches per inch across all edges.
Designed as a standard O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock blank for use in toolroom, die making, and precision machining applications where AISI Type O1 material specification is required.
O1 tool steel flat stock is typically cut, milled, and ground by machinists or tool and die makers using conventional metalworking equipment. When heat treating, follow the oil quench hardening and tempering procedure appropriate for AISI O1 as published by the material supplier — do not substitute water quench. Wear appropriate PPE during cutting and grinding operations. Consult applicable shop safety standards before performing any heat treatment.
