The STARRETT 54182 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die work, and precision machining applications. It is manufactured from AISI Type O1 tool steel, a general-purpose oil-hardening grade known for its dimensional stability after heat treatment and good wear resistance. This bar measures 5/8 inch thick, 5 inches wide, and 18 inches long, with a thickness tolerance of plus or minus 0.001 inches and a width tolerance of 0.000 to 0.005 inches. At 15.58 pounds, it is ready for bench or saw cutting before hardening. Always use personal protective equipment including eye protection and cut-resistant gloves when cutting or handling tool steel stock. Verify final dimensions by grinding after hardening and tempering, as dimensional change during heat treatment is expected.
