The STARRETT 54177 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar intended for toolmakers, machinists, and die makers who require tight-tolerance raw material for fabricating punches, dies, jigs, gauges, and other precision tooling components. Measuring 0.625 inches thick, 2 inches wide, and 18 inches long, this flat stock conforms to AISI Type O1 material specification and weighs 6.4 pounds per piece. Thickness tolerance is held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, giving fabricators a reliable starting point before final grinding or machining operations.
O1 tool steel flat stock is commonly used in tool and die shops, machine shops, and maintenance departments where custom tooling is produced in-house. This bar is suited to applications requiring moderate wear resistance combined with good machinability in the annealed state. It is intended to be rough-machined to near-final shape, then hardened and tempered through an oil-quench heat treat cycle before finish grinding to final dimensions. Typical end uses include blanking dies, forming punches, knife blades, and precision gauging fixtures.
Designed as a standard O1 tool steel flat stock bar suitable for general toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications where AISI Type O1 oil-hardening material is specified.
Machining and heat treatment of tool steel flat stock should be performed by qualified machinists or tool and die makers familiar with O1 steel behavior. The bar is supplied in the annealed condition and must be oil-quenched and tempered to achieve working hardness — do not attempt to use in a hardened application without completing the appropriate heat treat cycle. Secure the bar properly in a milling vise or surface grinder chuck before any material removal. Consult applicable shop safety standards and heat treat equipment manufacturer guidelines when processing this material.
