The STARRETT 54174 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications. Manufactured from AISI Type O1 tool steel, this flat stock measures 0.625 inches thick, 1 inch wide, and 18 inches long, with a weight of 3.19 pounds. Thickness tolerance is held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, and squareness is maintained at 0.003 inches per inch on all edges. O1 tool steel is a widely used cold-work grade valued for its machinability in the annealed state and its ability to achieve high hardness after oil quenching. This bar ships in a ready-to-machine annealed condition.
This flat stock is suited for fabricating punches, dies, gauges, cutting tools, and general toolroom components. It is commonly used in machine shops, tool and die shops, and maintenance departments where close-tolerance bar stock is required for custom tool fabrication or repair. The 18-inch length provides enough material for a range of small to medium tool blanks. Machinists and tool and die makers are the primary installers and end users of this stock.
Designed as a standard AISI Type O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock suitable for general toolmaking, die work, and precision machining applications requiring close-tolerance cold-work tool steel bar.
O1 tool steel flat stock is typically worked by machinists and tool and die makers using standard milling, grinding, and sawing equipment. Material should be handled and machined in the annealed condition prior to heat treatment. Oil quenching for hardening should be performed by a qualified heat treater following AISI O1 recommended procedures. Use appropriate personal protective equipment when cutting or grinding tool steel.
