The STARRETT 54171 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar sized at 9/16 inches thick, 2 inches wide, and 18 inches long. O1 tool steel is a general-purpose, oil-hardening grade known for its good dimensional stability during heat treatment and its ability to hold a sharp, durable edge after hardening. This flat stock ships in the annealed condition, ready for machining before hardening. It is used in toolrooms and job shops by machinists, toolmakers, and die makers who need reliable, tight-tolerance steel bar for fabricating punches, dies, gauges, jigs, and cutting tools. Thickness tolerance is held to plus or minus 0.001 inches.
This flat stock is suited for toolroom and production applications where close dimensional tolerances and predictable heat-treat response are required. Typical uses include blanks for custom punches and dies, wear plates, guide rails, and specialty cutting tools in both small-shop and production-facility environments. The annealed condition allows conventional machining with standard tooling before oil-quench hardening to final hardness.
Designed as a standard AISI Type O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock suitable for general toolroom fabrication, die making, and punch manufacturing applications.
Machining and heat treatment of tool steel flat stock should be performed by qualified machinists or toolmakers following established shop procedures. Oil quenching requires appropriate personal protective equipment and fire-safe quench tank setups in compliance with applicable shop safety codes. Always allow the part to reach ambient temperature before measuring finished dimensions to ensure tolerance verification accuracy. Grinding operations after hardening should use sufficient coolant to prevent surface burning and stress cracking.
