The STARRETT 54168 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die work, gauging, and precision machining applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specifications, this flat stock measures 9/16 inches thick, 1 inch wide, and 18 inches long, with a weight of 2.87 pounds. Thickness tolerance is held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, and squareness is maintained at 0.003 inches per inch on all edges. These tight tolerances make it suitable for applications where dimensional consistency is critical before heat treating and hardening.
O1 tool steel flat stock is used by machinists, toolmakers, and metalworking professionals in job shops, manufacturing facilities, and maintenance departments. This grade is commonly selected for punches, dies, cutting tools, gauges, and fixtures where the part will be oil-quench hardened after machining. The 18-inch length provides usable stock for a range of small to medium blanks without requiring additional saw cutting in many cases.
Designed as a standard AISI Type O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat bar suitable for general toolmaking, die making, and precision fixture applications requiring ground flat stock with controlled tolerances.
This material is supplied in the annealed condition and is intended to be machined to final form before oil-quench hardening. Heat treating should be performed by a qualified tool and die maker or heat treat facility following accepted procedures for O1 tool steel. Appropriate personal protective equipment and ventilation are required during machining and heat treating operations. Handle edges with care as ground flat stock edges can be sharp.
