The STARRETT 54167 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specifications, this flat stock measures 9/16 inches thick, 3/4 inches wide, and 18 inches long, with a weight of 2.15 pounds. Thickness tolerance is held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, making it suitable for applications that require close dimensional control before and after hardening. Licensed machinists and toolmakers rely on O1 material for its predictable heat-treat response and good machinability in the annealed state.
This flat stock is used in job shops, tool and die operations, and maintenance departments where short-run tooling, punches, dies, gauges, and fixtures are fabricated in-house. The 18-inch length is a standard cut suitable for a wide range of tooling blanks. O1 oil-hardening steel is selected when water-hardening steel introduces too much distortion risk and when air-hardening grades are unnecessary for the application.
Designed as a standard O1 tool steel flat stock blank suitable for general toolmaking, die making, fixture building, and precision machining operations requiring AISI Type O1 oil-hardening material.
Machining and grinding should be completed in the annealed condition before oil-hardening heat treatment. Heat treatment of O1 tool steel should be performed by a qualified toolmaker or heat-treat facility following established metallurgical procedures for this alloy. Secure the workpiece properly during all cutting, grinding, and finishing operations. Follow applicable shop safety standards for handling tool steel stock.
