The STARRETT 54163 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock blank used in toolmaking, die work, and precision machining applications. Measuring 0.5 inches thick, 10 inches wide, and 18 inches long, this flat stock is manufactured from AISI Type O1 tool steel and held to tight dimensional tolerances: plus or minus 0.001 inches on thickness, a length tolerance of plus 0.250 inches, and a width tolerance of 0.000 to 0.015 inches. Squareness on all edges is held to 0.003 inches per inch. At 25.5 pounds, this is a substantial blank suited for heavy-duty toolroom use. Machinists, tool-and-die makers, and metalworking shops rely on this material for precision work requiring consistent hardening response.
O1 tool steel flat stock is commonly used in the fabrication of punches, dies, gauges, fixtures, and cutting tools. Heat treatment, including oil quenching, should follow established metallurgical procedures for AISI Type O1 steel and be performed by personnel experienced with tool steel hardening. Allow for thermal expansion and material movement during heat treat when planning final dimensions.
