The STARRETT 54162 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock blank used in toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specifications, this flat stock measures 0.5 inches thick, 8 inches wide, and 18 inches long, and weighs 20.4 pounds. Thickness tolerance is held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, and squareness is maintained at a maximum of 0.003 inches per inch on all edges. These tight tolerances make it suitable for applications where dimensional consistency is critical before hardening operations begin.
O1 tool steel flat stock is used in machine shops, tool and die operations, and precision fabrication environments. It is typically worked in the annealed condition — shaped, ground, or machined to near-final dimensions — then oil-quenched and tempered to achieve the desired hardness. This stock is appropriate for gauges, punches, dies, blades, and fixtures requiring a tough, wear-resistant tool steel. Installation and fabrication are performed by machinists, toolmakers, and metalworking professionals.
Designed as a general-purpose O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat blank for use in toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications where AISI Type O1 material specification is required.
Fabrication and heat treating of tool steel should be performed by qualified machinists or toolmakers familiar with O1 oil-hardening procedures. Machine to near-final dimensions before hardening, as post-hardening material removal is significantly more difficult. Follow established heat treating procedures for AISI O1 including proper preheat, austenitizing temperature, and oil quench sequence. Appropriate personal protective equipment is required during grinding, machining, and heat treating operations.
