The STARRETT 54160 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar sized at 0.5 inches thick, 6 inches wide, and 18 inches long. O1 tool steel is an oil-quench grade known for its tight dimensional tolerances and consistent hardening response, making it a go-to material for toolmakers, machinists, and die makers who need reliable stock for custom tooling, jigs, fixtures, gauges, and cutting tools. This flat stock ships in a mill-annealed condition, ready for machining prior to heat treat. The piece weighs approximately 15.3 pounds. Thickness and squareness tolerances are held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, supporting precision layout and grinding work.
This flat stock is suited for tool and die shops, machine shops, and maintenance departments that fabricate custom components in-house. Typical applications include blanks for punches, dies, forming tools, and wear plates in both light industrial and production environments. At 6 inches wide and 18 inches long, the blank provides enough stock for larger tooling profiles or can be cut down for multiple smaller components. The 0.5-inch thickness is a common starting point for die plates and precision flat tooling.
Designed as a standard O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat blank compatible with conventional heat-treat processes used in tool and die fabrication, including oil quench and temper cycles appropriate for AISI O1 grade material.
Machining and grinding of O1 tool steel flat stock should be performed by qualified toolmakers or machinists using appropriate feeds and speeds for annealed tool steel. Secure the workpiece firmly before cutting or grinding operations. When heat treating, follow established AISI O1 austenitizing and oil-quench procedures and use proper personal protective equipment around quench oils. Consult applicable shop safety standards before beginning heat treat operations.
