The STARRETT 54150 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die work, and precision machining applications. Manufactured from AISI Type O1 tool steel, this flat stock measures 0.5 inches thick, 1 inch wide, and 18 inches long. It is supplied in an annealed, machinable condition ready for custom profiling, grinding, and heat treatment. Thickness and squareness tolerances are held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, making this stock suitable for applications where dimensional accuracy before hardening is critical. Licensed machinists, toolmakers, and die makers are the primary installers of this material.
This flat stock is used in the fabrication of punches, dies, gauges, jigs, fixtures, and cutting tools in both job shop and production environments. O1 tool steel offers good machinability in its annealed state and achieves high surface hardness after oil-quench heat treatment, making it a standard choice for toolroom stock. The 18-inch length provides enough material for single-piece tooling components or multiple shorter blanks cut from one bar.
Designed as a standard toolroom flat stock blank compatible with conventional milling, surface grinding, EDM, and oil-quench heat treatment processes used in tool and die fabrication.
Cutting, grinding, and heat treatment of tool steel should be performed by qualified machinists or toolmakers following established shop safety procedures. Secure the workpiece properly before machining to prevent movement. Oil quenching requires appropriate personal protective equipment and fire safety precautions as specified by shop and OSHA guidelines. Always allow the hardened part to reach ambient temperature before final grinding to prevent stress cracking.
