The STARRETT 54149 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specifications, this flat stock measures 0.5 inches thick, 0.75 inches wide, and 18 inches long, and weighs 1.91 pounds. Thickness tolerance is held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, making it suitable for applications requiring close dimensional control before and after heat treatment. O1 tool steel responds predictably to oil-quench hardening, allowing machinists and toolmakers to rough-machine the stock, harden it, and finish-grind to final dimensions.
This flat stock is used in machine shops, tool and die shops, and maintenance departments for fabricating punches, dies, gauges, jigs, fixtures, and cutting tools. Its rectangular cross-section and tight tolerances make it a practical starting point for low-to-medium production tooling. The 18-inch length provides enough material for multiple short blanks or a single longer tool body. It is suited for both conventional machining and surface grinding operations prior to hardening.
Designed as a standard O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat bar suitable for general toolmaking and die-making applications where AISI Type O1 material specification is required.
Cutting and machining of tool steel flat stock should be performed by qualified machinists using appropriate feeds, speeds, and coolant for tool steel. Heat treatment, including oil quenching, should follow established procedures for AISI O1 and should be performed by qualified personnel with appropriate equipment. Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment when cutting, grinding, or heat-treating tool steel. Deburr all cut edges before handling or measuring finished blanks.
