The STARRETT 54147 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications. It measures 0.5 inches thick by 0.5 inches wide by 18 inches long and weighs 1.28 pounds. O1 tool steel is an oil-hardening, cold-work alloy known for its dimensional stability and good machinability in the annealed state. Thickness tolerance is plus or minus 0.001 inches, and squareness along all edges is held to 0.003 inches per inch, making this stock suitable for applications requiring tight geometric control before and after heat treatment.
This flat stock is used in fabrication shops, tool and die shops, and machine shops where O1 tool steel is specified for punches, dies, fixtures, gauges, cutting tools, and similar toolroom components. Its annealed condition allows machining and grinding to final dimensions prior to oil hardening. It is appropriate for both prototype work and short-run production tooling in a range of metalworking environments.
Designed as a standard O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat bar suitable for general toolroom, die making, and precision machining applications where AISI Type O1 material is specified.
Cutting, grinding, and machining should be performed in the annealed state before heat treatment. Oil hardening requires controlled heating and quenching procedures performed by a qualified heat treater or toolroom professional. Follow applicable shop safety standards when cutting or grinding tool steel. Appropriate personal protective equipment, including eye protection and gloves, is required during handling and machining operations.
