The STARRETT 54137 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die making, jig fabrication, and precision machining applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specification, this flat stock measures 7/16 inches thick, 1/2 inches wide, and 18 inches long and weighs 1.12 pounds. O1 tool steel offers excellent machinability in the annealed state and responds well to oil-hardening heat treatment, making it a common choice for punches, dies, gauges, and cutting tools. Thickness tolerance is held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, giving machinists a reliable starting dimension without extensive stock removal.
This flat stock is suited for job shop, tool and die, and maintenance machining environments where small-section tool steel bar stock is needed in ready-to-machine lengths. The 18-inch length is practical for bench work and small fixture components. Machinists, tool and die makers, and industrial maintenance technicians are the typical end users. It is sold as a single piece with a package quantity of one.
Designed as a standard AISI Type O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat bar suitable for general toolmaking, die work, and precision fixture applications requiring small-section flat stock.
Machining, grinding, and heat treatment of tool steel should be performed by qualified machinists or tool and die makers familiar with O1 steel characteristics. Always follow established shop safety practices when cutting or grinding tool steel, including appropriate eye and respiratory protection. Heat treatment — including hardening and tempering — should follow recognized metallurgical procedures for AISI O1 tool steel. Consult applicable shop standards and material data sheets before performing any thermal processing.
