The STARRETT 54129 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die work, jig fabrication, and precision machining applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specifications, this flat stock measures 3/8 inch thick, 5 inches wide, and 18 inches long, with a weight of 9.56 pounds per piece. Thickness and squareness tolerances are held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, making this stock suitable for applications that require tight dimensional control before and after heat treatment. It is typically stocked and cut by tool and die shops, machine shops, and industrial maintenance operations.
O1 tool steel is a general-purpose oil-hardening grade widely used for blanks, punches, dies, gauges, and cutting tools. Its predictable heat-treat response and good machinability in the annealed state make it a standard choice for shops that machine parts to near-finished dimensions before hardening. This piece is supplied in the annealed condition and is intended for final heat treating by the end user or a commercial heat treater after machining. The 18-inch length and 5-inch width provide enough material for most single-piece or short-run tooling applications.
Designed as a standard AISI O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock suitable for general toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications where an oil-quench heat-treat process is required.
Machining of O1 tool steel flat stock should be performed in the annealed condition using appropriate cutting fluids and carbide or high-speed steel tooling. Heat treatment, including hardening and tempering, should be performed by a qualified heat treater following AISI O1 recommended thermal cycles. Operators should follow applicable shop safety procedures when cutting, grinding, or handling tool steel stock. Wear appropriate PPE including eye protection and cut-resistant gloves when handling or cutting bar stock.
