The STARRETT 54117 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specification, this flat stock measures 3/8 inches thick, 1/2 inches wide, and 18 inches long, with a weight of 0.96 pounds per piece. Thickness tolerance is held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, making it suitable for applications where dimensional consistency is critical before and after hardening. It is stocked in a soft, machinable state and intended for heat treatment by the end user.
O1 tool steel flat stock is a standard material for fabricating punches, dies, cutting tools, gauges, and fixtures in machine shops and toolrooms. Its oil-hardening characteristic makes it appropriate for shops that require a predictable, low-distortion hardening process. This bar stock is sized for direct use in small tooling applications or can be further machined to finished dimensions prior to heat treat. Machinists, toolmakers, and die makers working in job shops or maintenance departments are the primary users of this material.
Designed as a standard O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat bar suitable for general toolroom, die shop, and precision machining applications requiring AISI Type O1 material specification.
Cutting, grinding, and machining of tool steel flat stock should be performed before hardening. Heat treatment of O1 tool steel requires controlled atmosphere or protective wrapping to minimize decarburization and should be performed by qualified personnel following established metallurgical procedures. Always use appropriate personal protective equipment when cutting or grinding tool steel bar stock. Consult material safety data and heat treat supplier guidelines before processing.
