The STARRETT 54115 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock blank used in precision toolmaking, die making, and fixture fabrication. It measures 5/16 inches thick, 8 inches wide, and 18 inches long, and weighs 12.75 pounds. The stock conforms to AISI Type O1 material specification, a general-purpose oil-hardening tool steel known for consistent dimensional stability and good machinability before hardening. Thickness tolerance is held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, and edge squareness is held to 0.003 inches per inch, making it suitable for applications requiring tight pre-hardened dimensional control. Machinists, tool and die makers, and trade fabricators typically work this stock before the hardening cycle.
This flat stock is suited for shop applications where a readily machinable tool steel blank is required before heat treat. Typical uses include cutting tools, gauges, punches, dies, and small fixture components. The 8-inch width and 18-inch length provide enough stock for multiple smaller blanks or a single larger component. The oversize length tolerance of plus 0.250 inches ensures sufficient material for facing and squaring to final length. Width tolerance runs from zero to minus 0.005 inches, and thickness tolerance is plus or minus 0.001 inches throughout.
Designed as a standard O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock blank compatible with conventional toolroom machining, surface grinding, and oil-quench heat treating processes per AISI Type O1 specifications.
Work this material in the annealed condition using conventional milling, turning, or grinding equipment before the hardening cycle. Heat treating O1 tool steel requires proper quenching in oil and should be performed by qualified personnel following established heat treat procedures and applicable shop safety codes. Allow the blank to reach room temperature before final grinding to finished dimensions. Do not attempt to cut or machine this stock after hardening without appropriate tooling for hardened materials.
