The STARRETT 54114 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in precision toolmaking, die making, jig fabrication, and general machine shop work. It measures 5/16 inches thick, 6 inches wide, and 18 inches long, and is held to a thickness tolerance of plus or minus 0.001 inches. The material conforms to AISI Type O1 specification, a standard oil-hardening tool steel known for its dimensional stability, machinability in the annealed state, and ability to hold a hardened edge after heat treatment. Machinists, toolmakers, and die makers use this flat stock as a starting blank for punches, dies, gauges, and fixture components.
This flat stock is suited for machine shop and tool room applications requiring tight dimensional control before and after heat treatment. The pre-finished surface and close tolerances reduce setup time when milling, grinding, or EDM-machining to final dimensions. It is appropriate for both small-batch prototype tooling and production die applications in manufacturing environments. The 18-inch length provides enough material for multiple blanks in typical toolroom scenarios.
Designed as a general-purpose O1 tool steel flat stock blank for toolroom, die shop, and precision machining applications requiring AISI Type O1 oil-hardening material.
O1 tool steel flat stock is machined by qualified toolmakers and machinists using conventional milling, surface grinding, or EDM equipment. Before heat treatment, verify all features are machined to pre-grind allowances per the applicable process specification. Oil quenching should follow the material supplier heat treatment guidelines for AISI O1; improper quench rate can cause distortion or cracking. Handle hardened parts carefully to avoid edge chipping prior to finish grinding.
