The STARRETT 54109 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die-making, jig fabrication, and precision machining applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specifications, this flat stock measures 5/16 inches thick, 3 inches wide, and 18 inches long, with a thickness tolerance of plus or minus 0.001 inches and a width tolerance of 0.000 to 0.005 inches. Edge squareness is held to 0.003 per inch across all edges. It is stocked in the annealed condition, ready for machining before heat treating. Tool and die makers, machinists, and metalworking professionals install and use this material.
This flat stock is suited for residential and industrial shop environments where precision tool steel is required. Typical applications include fabrication of punches, dies, gauges, cutting tools, and machine components that will undergo oil-hardening heat treatment after machining. The 18-inch length provides sufficient stock for most tool and die applications without requiring additional resizing. This bar stock ships as a single piece with a minimum order quantity of one.
Designed as a standard AISI Type O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat bar suitable for general toolmaking, die work, and precision machining applications requiring oil-hardening tool steel stock.
Machining and heat treatment should be performed by qualified tool and die makers or machinists familiar with O1 tool steel procedures. Always secure the stock properly in a vise or fixture before cutting or milling operations. Heat treatment including hardening and tempering should follow accepted metallurgical practices for AISI O1 tool steel. Handle edges with care as ground surfaces can be sharp.
