The STARRETT 54106 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar intended for toolmakers, machinists, and die makers who need a reliable pre-cut blank for fabricating punches, dies, gauges, cutting tools, and fixtures. Made to AISI Type O1 specification, this flat stock measures 5/16 inches thick, 1-1/2 inches wide, and 18 inches long. Thickness tolerance is held to +/- 0.001 inches, giving machinists a consistent starting point before grinding or machining to final dimension. At 2.39 pounds per piece, the bar is easy to handle on a surface grinder or milling machine without additional staging support.
O1 tool steel is a general-purpose oil-hardening grade well suited to low-to-medium production tooling where dimensional stability through heat treatment matters. This flat stock is appropriate for job shops, tool rooms, and maintenance departments in industrial, manufacturing, and fabrication environments. Machining and grinding of O1 tool steel flat stock is typically performed by qualified toolmakers or machinists using conventional milling, surface grinding, or EDM equipment. Heat treatment — including austenitizing temperature, soak time, and oil quench procedure — should follow the material manufacturer's published guidelines for AISI O1; do not substitute water or air cooling. Allow the bar to reach ambient temperature and inspect for flatness before scribing or machining to final layout.
