The STARRETT 54072 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, jig building, punch and die work, and precision machining applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specification, this flat stock measures 0.25 inches thick, 1 inch wide, and 18 inches long, and weighs 1.28 pounds. Thickness and squareness tolerances are held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, making this stock suitable for applications where dimensional accuracy matters before and after hardening. Machinists, tool and die makers, and toolroom technicians work with this material when they need a predictable, oil-quench-hardenable steel that machines cleanly in the annealed state.
O1 tool steel flat stock in this size range is commonly used in small-shop and production toolroom environments for fabricating cutting tools, gauges, jigs, fixtures, and wear parts. The 18-inch length provides enough working stock for most single-piece toolroom components without excessive material waste. This bar is supplied in the annealed condition and is intended to be hardened and tempered after machining to final shape.
Designed as a standard AISI O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock suitable for general toolroom fabrication where O1 grade material is specified.
Cutting, grinding, and machining of tool steel flat stock should be performed with appropriate metalworking equipment by qualified machinists or tool and die makers. Hardening and tempering operations require a controlled heat treatment process and should follow established procedures for AISI O1 tool steel. Always allow the bar to reach thermal equilibrium before precision grinding to final tolerance. Handle ground and hardened stock carefully to avoid edge chipping.
