The STARRETT 54055 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die making, jig fabrication, and precision machining applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specification, this flat stock measures 3/16 inches thick, 6 inches wide, and 18 inches long, with a finished weight of 5.74 pounds. Thickness tolerance is held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, making it suitable for applications where dimensional consistency is critical before and after hardening. It is supplied in the annealed condition, ready for machining prior to oil-quench heat treatment.
O1 tool steel flat stock is used by tool and die makers, machine shops, and metalworking tradespeople for fabricating punches, dies, gauges, fixtures, blades, and cutting tools. The 6-inch width and 18-inch length provide generous stock for layout and machining of medium to large tooling components. This material is particularly well suited for applications requiring a good balance of machinability in the annealed state and hardness after oil quenching.
Designed as a general-purpose O1 tool steel flat stock for use in tool and die, fixture, and precision machining applications requiring oil-hardening material per AISI Type O1 specification.
Machining and heat treatment of O1 tool steel should be performed by a qualified machinist or toolmaker familiar with tool steel handling procedures. Always follow established shop safety practices when sawing, milling, or grinding tool steel stock. Oil quench hardening requires proper heat treatment equipment and should follow the material manufacturer's recommended thermal cycle. Protect machined surfaces from corrosion prior to heat treatment.
