The STARRETT 54052 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock blank used in toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specification, this flat stock measures 3/16 inches thick, 3-1/2 inches wide, and 18 inches long, and weighs 3.5 pounds. Thickness and squareness tolerances are held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, making it suitable for applications where dimensional accuracy is required before hardening. It is supplied in the annealed (soft) condition and is intended to be machined, then oil-quench hardened by the end user or a heat treater.
O1 tool steel flat stock in this size range is commonly used to fabricate punches, dies, gauges, jigs, fixtures, and cutting tools. Machinists and toolmakers working in job shops, tool-and-die operations, and maintenance departments select this stock for its predictable oil-hardening characteristics and good machinability in the annealed state. At 3/16 inches thick and 3-1/2 inches wide, this piece is well suited for flat die components, wear plates, and forming tools that require a moderate cross-section.
Designed as a general-purpose O1 tool steel flat stock for toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications requiring AISI Type O1 oil-hardening material in a 3/16 x 3-1/2 x 18 inch blank size.
Machining should be performed in the annealed condition before hardening. Oil quenching and tempering should be carried out by a qualified heat treater or experienced toolmaker following established procedures for AISI O1 tool steel. Appropriate personal protective equipment is required during grinding and heat-treat operations. Verify final dimensions after heat treatment, as minor distortion is normal with oil-hardening steels.
