The STARRETT 54046 is a precision-ground flat stock bar made from AISI Type O1 oil-hardening tool steel. It measures 3/16 inches thick, 1-1/4 inches wide, and 18 inches long, and weighs 1.2 pounds. O1 tool steel offers excellent machinability in the annealed state and develops high surface hardness after oil-quench heat treatment, making it a reliable choice for fabricating punches, dies, gauges, cutting tools, and general toolroom components. Machinists, tool-and-die makers, and metal fabricators use this stock as raw material that is cut, shaped, and heat-treated to final specification.
This flat stock is suited for toolroom, job shop, and light manufacturing environments where close-tolerance blanks are required before machining or hardening. The annealed condition allows conventional milling, drilling, grinding, and turning prior to heat treat. Typical applications include die blanks, form tools, straight edges, and fixture components. The 18-inch length provides adequate material for most single-piece toolroom jobs while minimizing waste.
Designed as standard AISI O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock suitable for use in any toolroom or fabrication application requiring annealed O1 material in a 3/16 x 1-1/4 x 18 inch profile.
O1 tool steel flat stock is worked by qualified machinists and tool-and-die makers using conventional metal-cutting equipment. Secure the workpiece firmly before cutting or grinding to prevent movement. Heat treatment — including preheat, austenitizing, and oil quenching — should follow established metallurgical procedures for AISI O1; consult the material data sheet for temperature ranges. Deburr all edges after machining and wear appropriate PPE when grinding or cutting tool steel.
