The STARRETT 54043 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die work, punches, and precision machining applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specifications, this flat stock measures 3/16 inches thick, 1/2 inch wide, and 18 inches long. Thickness tolerance is held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, giving machinists a consistent starting dimension before heat treatment. At 0.48 pounds per piece, this stock is a practical size for small tooling components. Licensed machinists, toolmakers, and die makers are the primary installers and users of this material.
O1 tool steel flat stock is commonly used in job shops, tool and die operations, and maintenance machining environments. It is supplied in the annealed condition, ready for machining prior to oil-quench hardening. Typical applications include blanks for punches, form tools, scrapers, and cutting blades. The 18-inch length is well suited to bench work and small machine setups. Squareness is held to an edge tolerance of 0.003 inches per inch across all edges, supporting accurate layout and fitment.
Designed as a general-purpose O1 tool steel flat bar for machining, toolmaking, and die-making applications where oil-hardening tool steel stock is specified.
O1 tool steel flat stock is machined, ground, and finished by qualified machinists or toolmakers prior to heat treatment. All grinding and cutting operations should be completed before hardening. When hardening, follow standard oil-quench procedures appropriate for AISI O1 tool steel and use proper PPE and fire controls. Consult material safety data for handling ground or machined steel swarf.
